CAMRA, the Campaign for Real Ale, has announced that St. Peter's Brewery, Old Style Porter 5.1% abv, has been voted Champion Beer of Suffolk by an expert tasting panel.
Old Style Porter is described in the 2005 Good Beer Guide as "a blend of mature old ale with a younger light beer, just as a true porter should be. The marriage produces a brew that is dark in colour and complex in taste."
St. Peter's have done exceptionally well considering they opened less than a decade ago. Built in a Victorian farm building attached to an ancient manor house in Suffolk, the first brew was produced in 1996 and the brewery has expanded and updated ever since; in 2002 it doubled in size and a new bottling hall was built.
David Sherman, CAMRA's Champion Beer of East Anglia Organiser, said, "Old Style Porter is a fantastic beer and worthy winner on this county award. I would like to congratulate the brewery on this success and wish them luck in the East Anglia regional competition."
Old Style Porter will now be entered in to the Champion Beer of East Anglia Competition and the winner will be announced in Sept 2005. If they then win the regional title, they will stand a chance of being entered into the Champion Beer of Britain Competition 2006 which will be held at the Great British Beer Festival, Earls Court next August.
