It's always difficult to find just the right place for that special celebration - particularly if you want somewhere different for a change.
After seventeen years of going to our favourite haunts for a wedding anniversary we decided to try pastures new for the 18th.
I didn't need a lot of persuading to go anywhere where 'brewery' is included in the name! The restaurant is set apart from the brewing operation in the imposing great hall of a wonderful building which dates back to the 13th century.
It calls itself Suffolk's Medievil Secret and it does rest remotely in the Suffolk countryside, but it has the advantage of brown signs from the A144 Bungay to Halesworth roads or from Flixton.
Our welcome was more than warm; we were encouraged to relax in the attractive bar and sample some of the brew from 50 metres or so away as we chose from the 'fine dining' menu which operates on Friday and Saturday evenings.
It sounds a bit posh but, although the surroundings are quite inspiring, the service is informal and friendly. The food was mouthwatering even from its description on the menu - and lived up to expectations.
My starter was the Thai seafood salad with coriander and chilli; my wife went for oak-smoked salmon, baby prawn rillete with tarragon and horseradish.
"Yummy" wasn't quite emotive enough and, as it turned out, we needed to retain "delicious" for the main course. I savoured roast code, saffron braised potatoes, baby spinnach and sauce vierge while there were similar murmurings of delight from opposite where my wife had smoked chicken, mange tout and sweetcorn risotto.
Inevitably, we had no room for another course but, to hell with it, we had one anyway. I thought cheese and biscuits might be a soft option but there was enough Stilton, brie and cheddar to make it a meal in itself. At least I wasn't the one tempted by the chocolate and almond torte!
The total bill was £59.50 but you don't have to sample the fine dining. St Peter's also offers snacks and bar meals, but if you want to feel a bit extra special, this may be hard to beat.
